Where low expansion foam systems are fitted in addition to the machinery space fire protection requirements, they must produce a 150 mm depth of foam, over the largest single area that oil fuel could spread, within 5 minutes. The expansion ratio is designed not to exceed 12:1.

Typical low expansion foam systems include Helideck platforms.  The foam flow rates, discharge devices and discharge times are determined by the size and type of risk involved.
